When PNG is the right destination

The most common reasons to convert a WebP to PNG are compatibility and transparency. PNG is opened by every image editor, office suite, design tool and operating system ever released in the last two decades. And unlike JPG, it keeps the alpha channel, so a WebP logo with a transparent background comes out as a PNG logo with a transparent background. That makes it the correct choice when you plan to place the image in a document, a presentation, a design layout or a video editor.

What you gain and what you do not

PNG is lossless, so from the moment of conversion onwards the image will not degrade no matter how many times it is opened and saved. It does not, however, restore anything the WebP already lost. If the WebP was saved at a low quality, the PNG will faithfully preserve those artefacts. Think of PNG as freezing the image exactly as it currently is.

Expect the PNG to be significantly larger. Lossy WebP is extremely efficient; a lossless PNG of the same picture can be five to fifteen times bigger for photographs. For flat graphics with few colours the difference is much smaller, and PNG can occasionally even win.

PNG and screen graphics

Because PNG uses lossless compression, it is the ideal format for screenshots, diagrams, charts and interface elements. If a WebP screenshot has slightly fuzzy text from lossy compression, converting to PNG will not sharpen it, but it will stop it getting worse. For new screenshots always capture straight to PNG.

Is PNG better than WebP?

PNG is more compatible and lossless, but larger. WebP is smaller and better for the web. Convert to PNG when a program refuses to open WebP or when you need a lossless master with transparency.

Will the transparent background be preserved?

Yes. PNG supports full alpha transparency, so a cut-out logo or product on a transparent WebP background stays transparent.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, while lossy WebP discards detail to shrink the file. A 100 KB WebP can easily become a 1 MB PNG. That is normal and is the price of a lossless, universally supported file.

Does converting to PNG improve the image quality?

No. Detail that was discarded when the WebP was made cannot be recovered. PNG simply stops any further loss from happening.
