How to upscale an image

What upscaling can and cannot do

Enlarging an image means creating pixels that were not in the original. There are two ways to do that. Resampling interpolates between the existing pixels using a mathematical filter and then optionally sharpens the result. It is fast, predictable, and excellent for images with clean edges: logos, icons, line art, text, diagrams and screenshots. AI upscaling uses a neural network trained on millions of photos to invent plausible detail. It can make a small photograph look genuinely sharper, but it also invents things that were never there, needs a large model download, and is slow.

This tool does resampling with a high-quality filter and a sharpening pass. It is the right tool for graphics, and an honest tool for photos: a photo comes out larger and smooth, not magically detailed.

Sharpening restores the edge definition that interpolation softens. On graphics it is almost always an improvement. On photographs it can exaggerate noise and JPG artefacts, so try it both ways.

Better options for logos

If the logo exists as a vector file (SVG, AI, EPS or PDF), use that instead of upscaling a raster copy: a vector can be exported at any size with perfect edges. Upscaling is for when the only copy you have is a small PNG or JPG.

Limits

Output is capped at around 40 megapixels, roughly 8,000 by 5,000 pixels, to keep the browser from running out of memory. A 4× enlargement of a 2,000 pixel wide image is already 8,000 pixels wide, so for large sources use 2×. Processing happens on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Will a tiny photo become sharp?
