Why dimensions matter more than file size
People often reach for a compressor when the real problem is that the image is simply too large in pixels. A 4,000 pixel wide photo displayed in a 600 pixel column still has to be downloaded in full, decoded in full and then thrown away by the browser. Resizing it to the size it will actually be shown at is the single biggest saving you can make, usually far larger than any quality tweak.
The resizer above lets you set a maximum width, a maximum height, or both. The image is scaled so that it fits inside that box while keeping its proportions. It never stretches, squashes or upscales, so a portrait and a landscape photo can be dropped in together and each comes out sized correctly.

How the scaling works
Scaling is done with the browser's own high-quality resampling, which averages neighbouring pixels rather than dropping them. That keeps fine lines and text smooth. Very large reductions (for example 6,000 px down to 300 px) are done in a single pass, which can slightly soften detail; if you are producing tiny thumbnails from huge originals and want maximum sharpness, resize to an intermediate size first and then to the final size.
Because the tool re-encodes the image on output, you can also change the format at the same time. A common workflow for web images is: resize to 1,600 px, output as WebP at quality 80. That routinely turns a 5 MB phone photo into a 150 KB file.
Metadata and orientation
Phone photos carry EXIF metadata including the orientation flag and, in many cases, the GPS location where the picture was taken. The resizer reads the orientation flag and bakes the correct rotation into the pixels, so the output looks the right way up everywhere. The metadata itself is not carried across to the new file, which means resized images do not leak your location when you post them. If you need to keep camera metadata for archival reasons, keep the original alongside the resized copy.
