JPG versus WebP for photographs

JPEG has been the default photo format for over thirty years. It is supported everywhere and compresses photographs well, but its compression scheme dates from the early 1990s. WebP uses more modern techniques: better prediction of neighbouring blocks, an in-loop deblocking filter that smooths the tell-tale JPG "blockiness", and more efficient entropy coding. Quality is not a like-for-like number

A quality of 80 in JPG and 80 in WebP do not produce the same result. WebP at 80 generally looks like JPG at 85 to 90. So if you are used to saving JPGs at 85, try WebP at 75 to 80 and compare. The saving compounds: lower quality number plus a more efficient codec.

Generation loss and why you should keep the original

Every lossy re-encode throws away a little more information. Converting a JPG to WebP once is fine. Converting a WebP back to JPG, editing it, saving it as JPG again and converting to WebP a second time will visibly degrade the image. Treat the JPG that came out of your camera or your editor as the master, and produce the WebP from that master each time you need it.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to WebP lose quality?

JPG is already lossy, so the WebP is re-encoded from the decoded JPG pixels. At quality 80 or above the difference is invisible, and the WebP will still be materially smaller. Avoid converting back and forth repeatedly; keep the original JPG as your master.

How much smaller will the file be?

Typically 25 to 35% smaller at matched quality. If the JPG was saved at a very high quality setting, or is large in pixels, the saving is often more like 50 to 60% once you pick a sensible WebP quality.

Does WebP support EXIF and colour profiles?
