Convert GPX to JSON

Turn a GPX file from a GPS watch, Strava, Komoot or a hiking app into GeoJSON for web maps, or into a plain JSON list of points for a spreadsheet or script. Your routes stay on your device.

How to convert GPX to JSON

  1. Drop one or more .gpx files into the tool below.
  2. Choose GeoJSON for maps, or a simple list of points.
  3. Click convert.
  4. Download the .geojson or .json files.

What a GPX file holds

GPX is the format GPS devices and fitness apps use to share where you went. Garmin watches, Strava, Komoot, AllTrails, Wikiloc and most cycling computers export it. Inside it is XML with three kinds of data: waypoints (single marked spots), routes (a planned line) and tracks (the line you actually recorded), each point with latitude, longitude and usually elevation and time.

Two kinds of JSON

OutputBest for
GeoJSONWeb maps such as Leaflet, Mapbox, Google Maps data layers, QGIS and geojson.io. Tracks become lines and waypoints become points.
Points listSpreadsheets, charts and scripts. Every point is one object with latitude, longitude, elevation and time.

Elevation and time

In GeoJSON, elevation is stored as the third number of each coordinate and the timestamps are kept alongside the line, so pace and climb can still be worked out. In the points list they are simply fields on each point.

Your location stays yours

A GPS track reveals where you live, train and travel, and at what times. Converting here is done entirely in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is my GPX uploaded?

No. The file is parsed in your browser. That matters, because a GPS track shows exactly where you live, run and ride.

What is the difference between GeoJSON and the points list?

GeoJSON is the standard for web maps like Leaflet, Mapbox and QGIS and keeps tracks as lines. The points list is a flat array with latitude, longitude, elevation and time for every point, which is easier to analyse.

Are elevation and timestamps kept?

Yes. Elevation becomes the third coordinate in GeoJSON and timestamps are kept per point.

Does it handle waypoints and routes too?

Yes. Waypoints become points, routes and tracks become lines, and each keeps its name.
