Why convert a lossy file to a lossless one
It seems backwards to convert a small JPG into a much larger PNG, but there are three solid reasons to do it. The first is editing: every time a JPG is saved it is recompressed and loses a little detail, so editors prefer to work in a lossless format and only export to JPG at the very end. The second is transparency: JPG cannot hold a transparent background, so if you plan to cut a subject out, you need the image in PNG first. The third is compatibility with strict uploaders: some forms, especially for logos, icons and app store assets, only accept PNG.

File size expectations
PNG uses DEFLATE compression, the same family as ZIP. It works well on areas of flat colour and repeating patterns and poorly on photographic noise. A photo therefore grows a lot; a screenshot or a scanned form with lots of white grows much less. If the PNG is only needed briefly for an edit, the size does not matter. If you need to store or share many of them, consider whether WebP lossless would serve the same purpose at a smaller size.

Does converting JPG to PNG make it higher quality?
No. The PNG contains exactly the pixels from the JPG, artefacts included. What it does is prevent any further quality loss on later saves, which is why editors prefer working from PNG.
Can I make the background transparent by converting to PNG?
The conversion itself does not remove backgrounds. It gives you a format that supports transparency, so you can then erase the background in an editor and keep it transparent.
Why is my PNG much bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless. A 500 KB JPG photo can become a 3 to 5 MB PNG. For flat graphics the growth is far smaller.
